Face powder has had a bit of a bad rap lately. For years, the complexion mantra has been glowy or dewy (thanks, J.Lo). Not only that, most of us have less-than-lovely memories of the matt, cakey powders of the past.
But while light-reflecting and sheer foundations and tints were stealing the spotlight, face powders were quietly reformulating themselves in the background, readying themselves for a comeback. Which could be right about now, thanks to this new L’Oréal number.
The triple-milled mix means it slips over skin in a silky, seamless way; while the pigment power is still strong enough to pack some punch. Indeed, you could wear this finishing powder without foundation underneath and still feel covered up. But the main benefit is that skin simply looks more polished. And, with its sweat-resistant formulation, it’s just the thing to get us through a long, hot summer.

There are several possible culprits when it comes to back breakouts - otherwise known as backne. If you’re working out a lot, sweat may be the main contributing factor. So look for workout gear that is breathable or else features fabric technology that claims to ‘wick away’ perspiration. You should also aim to shower after each cardio session.
Another cause may be long hair that’s loaded with styling product - this could be blocking pores, which can lead to pimples. So try to wear your hair up as much as possible. Alternatively, your breakouts may be due to naturally overactive oil glands - same as with many cases of facial spots. (more…)
There are a million anti-ageing lotions and potions out there, but sunscreen is still the most protective, proactive skincare you can take. Experts estimate that sun damage is responsible for up to eighty per cent of signs of ageing. So make sure you’re sun-proofing your face properly before sorting out the rest of your regimen - otherwise all of your efforts will be going to waste.
What you need to know …
* Moisturisers and foundations that come in-built with SPF may offer a degree of protection - but it’s crucial to apply a separate and specific sun-shielding product. Not only do we rarely use the amount of moisturiser or foundation necessary to fulfil the sun protection level promised by these products - but they generally don’t use the most effective sunscreening ingredients in their formulations.
* Look for suncare that is marked not only SPF30 or more, but also ‘broad spectrum’. This means that as well as guarding against UVB rays (known as the burning rays), it also shields skin from UVA rays (often referred to as the ageing rays), which penetrate deeper into the dermis and cause the structural damage that leads to premature wrinkles. Unprotected sun exposure can also result in pigmentation problems as well as roughness of texture. (more…)
Oh my gosh, I am still in sensory overload. Marie Antoinette is the most visually beautifully movie I have seen in such a long time. The sumptuous shimmering costumes, the pastel Ladurée maccarons, the Manolo Blahnik bejewelled court shoes, the gold-leafed palace of Versailles… And then there’s Kirsten herself as the beautiful teen queen, with her stained lips and porcelain skin and powdered hair (courtesy of Klorane Dry Shampoo, I have read) that gets taller and crazier as the film goes on. It’s had mixed reviews, yes, and it may not have us rushing out to pack all that powder on our faces (not such a suitable look for an Australian summer) but see it at least to treat yourself to a couple of hours of pure unadulterated gorgeousness.
How much do you love Scarlett Johansson in the new Louis Vuitton campaign? She looks like an Elizabethan cherub. Maybe not surprising, seeing as she’s currently channelling one of King Henry’s mistresses in The Other Boleyn Girl. And then there’s Cate Blanchett soon to star in the sequel to Elizabeth. Wonder if we’ll start seeing some more Queen E-ish looks around - you know, the strawberry-blonde hair, the pale skin, the even paler eyebrows and lashes. It’s a brave girl to try to pull off no-makeup-eyes though. You need flawless skin, like Scarlett. And naturally pale features. A bit Nicole Kidman-ish. Or then there’s the other style of queen beauty about to star on our screens: Kirsten Dunst’s Marie Antoinette, with her powdered face and rosebud lips. I’m seeing the film tonight and can’t wait - will report back tomorrow.
