I have pale skin - what makeup would you recommend?

First up, be very wary of bronzers, especially ones that are warm or orange-ish in tone, as they can end up looking garish and obvious on paler complexions. If you do want a little colour, I’d suggest mixing some fake tan into your night cream - you’ll wake up with a natural-look glow and a seamless sunkissed hue.

Having said that, there’s no reason you shouldn’t celebrate your pale skin. Just think of the likes of Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Liv Tyler, or models Gemma Ward and Coco Rocha (pictured), with their porcelain and creamy complexions. The key to pulling off a pale look well is a great concealer. Pale skins shows up blemishes more than darker skins, so invest in a concealer that can hide any spots, redness and dark circles, and that will generally even out skintone. Try M.A.C Select Cover-Up ($32 from M.A.C).

Once you’ve smoothed out skintone, you need to put a little colour back into your face by way of blush. Go for a rosy tone (you basically want to find a shade close to the colour you naturally flush) and pop some right on the apples of cheeks. A pink- or pearl-toned highlighter dusted along the upper cheekbones is also a pretty look for pale skins - and on days when your skin is looking a little dull, you can mix it into your moisturiser for a gorgeous all-over gleam. Maybelline, Australis and L’Oréal Paris all have products that would work, so go have a play at your local pharmacy.

In terms of lip and eye buys, a lot depends on your hair colour. In general, pale-skinned girls with darker hair can risk looking washed out, so it’s recommended to strongly define one feature. Think Snow White with cherry lips. Or else, apply lashings of black liner and mascara to help eyes stand out. If you have lighter hair, you could go for more of a tonal effect - for example, champagne eye shadows and pretty shimmery lip glosses - or else add pink lips to play up a soft, feminine look.
