Not So Mellow About Yellow

August 15, 2007

I’m generally pretty laid-back. Not much riles me. Okay, Victoria Beckham, floury apples and bad hair extensions do make my blood boil a little. Yellow makeup is another thing I jump on my soap box about. I’m not talking yellow-toned foundation and concealer, of course, which look much more natural than they sound and are a must-have in every makeup kit. I’m talking eye shadow in any shade of the spectrum that runs from lemon to saffron. I’m not sure why I hate yellow shadow so much. It’s all a bit too performance artist, maybe. Not to mention jaundicey.

I am, however, coming around to the yellow dress (I guess no major surprise, seeing as I have 80+ dresses in my wardrobe – but let me just quickly say here, I’m not the Imelda of frocks, they’re all I wear, and most of them are vintage finds). Have you noticed all the pretty sunflower frocks starting to pop up? Perhaps inspired by the likes of Reese at the Golden Globes (remember that strapless Nina Ricci dress) or Kate Hudson here, wearing Valentino (I think).

I’m even coming around to golden hair (according to the hair colourists I know, yellow-blonde is on the way back and my honey-blonde is looking a little over).

As for eyes, well if you must get a yellow makeup fix, what about we compromise on a yellow-gold shimmer. I’m strictly a cool-gold kind of girl, but well, I’m trying to keep an open mind here and be the cool not mumsy beauty editor. Just let’s agree to never talk about Victoria Beckham, floury apples and bad hair extensions.
