How to … Practise Good Beauty Etiquette

You don’t need an expensive finishing school in the Swiss Alps to be gorgeously groomed. You just need to brush up on a few beauty rules. Read on for your look-chic checklist.

Keep it in the Bathroom: Never walk out the door without everything in place - that goes for hair and concealer, as much as for clothing. Nobody wants to watch you messing around with makeup. And anyway, don’t you want everyone to think you wake up looking that gorgeous? Leave your makeup routine in the bathroom, or at your dressing table - for best results, anywhere near natural light so you can be sure you’ll be looking your best when you step outside.

Whatever You Do, Never Ever … While making-up in public is hardly in the top 100 of society crimes, there are some rituals that should come close. Namely, refrain from doing anything that involves shedding and sharing around your dead cells. Sure, you’d hardly loofah outside. But brushing hair and clipping or filing nails are just as icky for your neighbours on the bus. !

bourjois-powder.jpgThe Exceptions. Etiquette experts agree that discreetly touching up powder or lipstick at the end of a meal, at the table, is okay. It can even be chic if a pretty compact and lipstick are involved. For instance, this gorgeous Bourjois Compact Powder ($23, from Priceline).

The Beauty SOS Kit. No matter how well you groom, beauty emergencies will always happen. Have a fix-it kit in your bag (brush, eye drops, breath freshener, a nail file, blotting papers, cotton buds, floss, hair elastic, etc), and always try to know where the nearest toilet is.

Top Tips for Fuss-free Beauty. Treat yourself to a regular manicure - this will keep nails and cuticles strong and snag-free … Slick hair with a smoothing serum and go for a simple, sleek style - so you don’t find yourself playing around with it during the day … Keep makeup minimal - there’s less to touch up … Think of ways to cut down your makeup needs altogether - for example, facials will keep skin clear and in check, fake tan may be all the base you need, and tinting lashes and brows are easy ways to define your eyes.
