New Lipstick Looks to Love (and One to Hate)

September 10, 2007

I’ve been reporting it for ages – lipstick is on the way back. But I’ve only just convinced myself. (Hey, if I did every beauty thing I tell you to do, I’d never have time to sleep). I’ve finally brushed up on my painting skills – it’s been a long time between lipstick-stained champagne glasses – and now I’m bordering on becoming obsessive.

It started when I came across this old photo of Chloe Sevigny. She’s normally a bit too scarily cool for me. But I love the pastel-pink-dress-red-lipstick combination and may just pinch it as one of my new-season new looks (although with a slightly lower hemline). I usually stick to my theory that pink is better on brunettes – I don’t know, it can just look a little too princessy on blondes – but there’s something about the red lips that give even the girliest dress a bit of a serious, grown-up edge. Which a pastel or shimmery gloss just cannot do.

estee-lauder-signature-lipstick-2.jpgMy latest favourite red, by the way, is Estée Lauder’s new Signature Lipstick in Rich Red ($40) – basically as gorgeous as in the shot you see here.

mandy-moore-dark-lips.jpgWarning with red though … go too dark on lips that are too thin and you could end up looking a little mean-mouthed, like Mandy Moore here, who’s usually so happy-smily-looking.

It had me emptying my two lipstick drawers in search of the just-right shade of pink. Revlon’s new Renewist ($19.95) in Pretty in Pink isn’t quite so fuchsia but still just as punchy and hot against a long swishing black dress – another look I intend to steal for the new season.
