Pushing Daisy

daisy-marc-jacobs-dog.jpg marc-jacobs-daisy.jpgToday sees the release of Marc Jacobs’ latest fragrance, Daisy ($80 from department stores and selected perfumeries). It’s named after the designer’s dog (pictured here), but fortunately isn’t any bit eau de canine at all. It smells like a happy summer day basically. While it doesn’t contain any actual daisy notes, it does boast a whole summer field of other pretty smells: wild strawberry, violet leaves and petals, gardenia, ruby red grapefruit, jasmine petals, white woods… And how can you resist the fabulous bottle? I made a noise I can only describe as a squeal when I first unwrapped my press sample. Too too cute.

daisy-washed-2.jpgI can’t let this post go without talking about my own Daisy, a 10-month-old maltese shihtzu. I’m trying to make her into a beauty dog. I sometimes succeed. Here she is after having been washed with Origins Doggy Dip shampoo. She also wears a rosemary and peppermint freshener spray I bought from Dogue, and gets styled with a chic French dry shampoo (I’m serious). But unfortunately, most of the time she smells like a pack of dogs, especially after she’s spent the day at the Bark Hyat doggy daycare (again: serious). I would spritz her with her namesake but, well, I’d rather hog it all for myself.

What’s the best way to prevent or treat ingrown eyebrows?

So funny that you asked this - I was only asking my beauty therapist about this the other week. She looked at me like I was crazy. It seems this isn’t a common beauty dilemma. I found I was getting ingrowns when I was most regularly getting my brows waxed. I’ve since cut down on the waxing, which has helped sort the issue out - I have pretty fair brows so it’s easy enough to do a DIY upkeep by tweezing every few days.

If you do prefer to keep waxing, you’ll need to prevent ingrown hairs in a similar way you do the ones on your bikini line. Keep the skin here exfoliated. When you scrub your face, spend a little extra time gently rubbing over eyebrows and just underneath. To treat ingrowns once they’re there, I used to dab on a salicylic acid-based pimple gel, which has a similarly exfoliating but also soothing effect. After a few days, the bump usually calms down and as soon as you see the hair poke through, you simply use tweezers to remove it. Alternatively, your therapist should be happy to treat any ingrowns for free, or for a nominal fee.

The Clever Mend-a-Broken-Nail Trick

essie-3-way-glaze.jpgIf a carefully nurtured nail is threatening to snap short, here’s your quick-fix mend: Cut a small strip from an unused tea bag and use a strengthening coat or nail glue to cover the break in the nail and create a protective patch. Re-paint colour, slick on top coat, and nobody will ever suspect you have less than perfect nails.

New Eye Buys from Shizen and La Mer

Shizen Lip & Eye Makeup Remover

shizen-lip-eye.jpgThere are so many reasons to love this product. Here are some of them: It dissolves makeup effectively and gently … Its sweet almond oil and calendula extract-based formula makes it feel more like a skin treatment than a makeup remover … It also contains vitamin E to help strengthen the delicate skin around the eyes … It leaves skin feeling soft and supple … It doesn’t upset sensitive skin or sting eyes … It’s certified organic.

$24.95, from Adore Beauty

La Mer The Eye Concentrate

la-mer-eye-concentrate-2.jpgIt’s pricey yes, but this eye cream is little short of amazing. It features several versions of the ‘miracle broth’ that is famously found in the original Crème de La Mer face cream, to give an extra anti-ageing boost to the skin around the eyes. But it also cleverly targets dark circles via magnetised hematite, a mineral form of iron oxide. Dark circles are often caused by leaking of the micro-capillaries in this area. The magnetised form of hematite is said help flush this out, thus having a fading effect on darkness. The silver-tip applicator that comes with the eye cream also enhances this process - it doubles as a massage tool and is a gorgeous way to work the cream into skin. Bonus: the coolness of the metal helps to calm down puffy eyes and pep up circulation. In summary: if your eyes are starting to show their age, and you want to spoil yourself, start saving up now.

My Latest BBFF (Best Beauty Friend Forever)

klorane-dry-shampoo.jpgNote to self: remember to start booking next haircolour appointment before leaving the salon. It’s one of the most basic beauty rules, really. But yet again, I suddenly find myself with regrowth to my chin and no half-head-highlights appointment to be found scribbled anywhere in my diary. And, of course, my two colourists (I like to spread the love around) are fully booked for at least the next three and a half weeks. Which means, I’ve had to just restock up on Klorane. If you haven’t yet discovered the wonder that is a can of Klorane Dry Shampoo, here’s what you’re missing out on: Nothing else can make your hair look and feel as clean and washed as, well, a wash itself. Little else can make your hair so bedhead-sexy so easily. And, if you’re blonde but currently suffering from two-tone hair syndrome, as I am, there’s nothing like it, short of an Hermès scarf, for hiding dark roots so stylishly. Find it for about $12 at selected pharmacies.
