I’ve been confused about this one too! I remember when it seemed like every company was bringing out all sorts of colours of concealer. It was based on the colour-wheel theory - that being, if you really want to strike out discolouration (whether redness, sallowness, darkness under the eyes), you need to use the opposing hue.
Having always had issues with either spots or flushed cheeks or rosacea, I fell in love with the idea straight away and went on and on about how genius these green concealers were. Until one day, I had a good look at my skin in a mirror in the outside light. While I couldn’t see any redness, what I could see were faint green splodges all over my face.As you can imagine, I went off the idea of colour-correcting pretty quickly. Since then, I am completely of the school that believes your concealer should exactly match your skintone - and I have interviewed many experts who say the same. A concealer’s success in dealing with discolouration isn’t about colour, but more about its formulation. Of course, shade is crucial. Most people have a yellow-based skintone, which is why that’s usually the recommendation you hear.
Key is to have your skintone matched up exactly, and then buy a concealer formulated to give serious coverage. I can’t recommend Becca concealers enough. There are something like 30 shades in the range, so you’ll find your perfect fit. And each concealer compact offers two strengths of coverage - so you can tailor to how severe your particular problem spots are. Becca is available at selected Myer stores. I use a green concealer to cover pimples and red spots but I use another one matching my skintone as well. I dot a little bit of green to balance out the red spots and then the skin colour concealer covers it all up. Sometimes I put a little bit of foundation on before the concealers too, to cover them up more if they need it.
