I was just reading the November Vanity Fair. A must-buy for the never-before-seen album of Kennedy family photos and the Annie Leibowitz-shot special on folk music and Miranda Kerr featuring in a line-up of Victoria’s Secret models, all naked except for heels, gloves and diamonds (well, perhaps skip that if you’re having a fat day). But the highlight is the feature on Serge Gainsbourgh, the legendary and très cool French singer and songwriter. There are a zillion fabulous anecdotes in the feature (and an exclusive look into his shrine of a house). But my favourite Serge quote is this: “I prefer ugliness to beauty, because ugliness endures.” Serge was possibly onto something. He was considered ugly – and he considered himself ugly. But he aged in a sexy way that young pretty boys don’t seem to be able to do (unless they’re Brad Pitt). Although Serge obviously wasn’t referring to women in that quote – considering that Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin (pictured here) were two of his lovers. Hardly ugly.
