When Even Your Roots Have Roots

November 9, 2007

Ta da! I have finally posted November Beauty Expert (just click the tab top of page): – my q&a with super-cool hair guru Brad Ngata. Being a blonde who’s battling with her inner brunette (as you’ll know from Wednesday’s post), I was really interested to hear about a colouring technique that’s starting to take off in a major way: shading. It’s basically a way to get both light and shade in your hair.

ashley-roots.jpgAs Brad told me, they use the free-hand colouring method of balayage to lighten ends, but then go back in to darken the roots, which gives hair dimension but also a kind of sexy, careless, can’t-be-bothered look. Gisele does the most natural-look version of it, where her ends look simply sun-kissed. But Brad prefers the edgier interpretation of shading, as seen on the Olsen twins. It’s a colour that says I’m-too-cool-to-be-at-the-salon-every-month. Even though you actually have to be at the salon every month or two to upkeep it all. In case you want your regrowth to also have regrowth. And that could be taking the trend a touch too far.
