It’s hard to advise you without knowing what your breakouts actually look like and exactly what your doctor has prescribed … I’m guessing that may be the oral contraceptive and an antibiotic treatment (whether internal or external). If your acne is of the very inflamed or cystic variety, you could now ask for a referral to a derm, who could discuss the option of a course of roaccutane, which basically shuts down over-productive oil glands.
But my instinct is, go and see a naturopath first. Without putting down conventional medicine at all, it may be just worth exploring some alternative therapies, which can be so complementary. A naturopath will look at your problem holistically, and advise you on any necessary diet and lifestyle changes, as well as any beneficial supplements.
On a beauty level, try slathering on a mud musk (such as Ahava Dead Sea Mineral Mud, $11) a couple of times a week, to draw out impurities and excess oil. You also need to exfoliate, to slough away dead skin, making blockages and breakouts less likely in the first place. Avoid mechanical scrubs, which may aggravate your condition. You want to instead use salicylic acid bodycare, as this will chemically and gently exfoliate (try Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Body Treatment Spray, $40). You should also make sure you’re wearing breathable clothes. If you exercise a lot, shower after each workout session, because sweat can contribute to breakouts.

Hi,
I have a similar problem as well: I have been on the contraceptive pill of a while as well as being on courses of antibiotics on and off for almost a year now. These are good short term solutions, but nothing has really seemed to have a lasting impact.
I was thinking of going to see a naturopath for a more holistic approach, but I’m not sure how to go about finding one who can help with skin conditions specifically.
Would anyone be able to recommend a naturopath (in Sydney) or help me out with how i could go about looking for one?
Thanks!

Hi Nikki - A naturopath sounds like a great idea. Try Anthia at Ovvio:

hi,
Nikki, I have been off the pill for a while now and have also taken antibiotics for my skin, which have not really helped. I just wanted to know if you went to the naturopath and whether you have experienced results, as I was thinking of trying the natural approach.
thanks.
