You should take your makeup cues from the dress code. If it’s a casual beach or garden wedding, where you might wear a floral dress and a wrap, go for a makeup look that is mostly natural, but add a sheer wash of colour in the form of a pastel eye shadow cream, or a berry lip gloss.
For a late afternoon affair, you can have a bit more fun with colour (both in your dress and makeup), as brights look less garish at sunset. Try a jewel-toned eye, such as a rich emerald or amethyst shadow, and pair it with nude lips (always good for allowing you to drink more cocktails with fewer touch-ups in between). (more…)

Who would have thought such a thing as a makeup sponge could be so fabulous? Just some of the reasons to love the Beauty Blender:
- It’s hot-pink for starters.
- It doesn’t soak up product, a common problem with many other makeup sponges.
- Its round shape means you get no streaks or hard edges (more…)
Did you know many moisturising masks can be worn overnight? So to get better beauty sleep, and to get even more out of your mask, slather it on at night, after thoroughly cleansing skin, massage it in after fifteen minutes, then wear to bed. Skin is at its most receptive state at night, when it can focus on regeneration rather than defending skin against the day’s stressors, so you’ll wake up with a deeply nourished and hydrated complexion.
Try: Elizabeth Arden Hydrating Mask ($48 from department stores).
It’s another brunette moment. Miranda Kerr’s in town with her dreamy dark-haired boyfriend Orlando Bloom. Gossip Girl’s finally back (find it on YouTube, where you can watch it in several parts), which as well all know is all about Blair, no matter how big and blonde and competitive Serena’s hair gets. And then there’s an exquisitely brunette Naomi Watts in The Painted Veil.
It’s all enough to make a blonde want to switch to the dark side. But as I’ve always lamented, some girls just weren’t born to be brunette. You need pretty perfect skin to pull it off, otherwise you have to be prepared to pile on the makeup. And I’ve come across another reason to rethink the recolour – as pointed out by The Gilmore Girls (I am slowly making my way through the complete box-set, please don’t judge me):
Lorelei: She does not have the nose for dark hair.
Rory: What does that mean?
Lorelai: Dark hair is like a giant light-up arrow pointing to what is wrong with you. Blonde hair– it all sort of blends in a haze of beige.
And they would know, being both brunette and perfectly-proportioned nose-wise. It’s a good theory and I’m going to adopt it as my own, although I think I’ll change the ‘haze of beige’ bit to ‘golden halo’. Makes it almost seem worth having a dodgy nose for.
