How do I use salt scrubs? With a loofah mitt or just my hand?

June 30, 2008

You simply scoop it out with your hand and massage into skin. Salt-and-oil scrubs are really effective on dry skin, so exfoliate before showering if you want the smoothest results possible – say, just before fake-tanning (although keep in mind that you’ll need to shower thoroughly to wash away all the oil residue).

As for loofahs mitts or towels, they’re best paired with a non-exfoliating shower gel, as they’re usually scrubby enough on their own. Just make sure to throw them in the washing machine regularly.

FYI: one great salt scrub is Urban Rituelle Beachcomber Frangipani Balinese Sea Salt Body Scrub, $24.95 from Scentiments.

  1. One tip that I find works for me personally with scrubs (salt or sugar) is that it’s better to scrub more gently for longer, than harder for a shorter period of time. Your skin can end up a bit red and irritated if you try to rush through it by scrubbing really hard. It’s better (for me at least) to treat your skin a bit more gently and just keep massaging the scrub around in gentle circles (not too gentle - you should still put some power into it. ;)) until your skin feels nice and polished.

  2. I prefer sugar scrubs myself. Much less harsh as the granules are small and round - no hard edges. And they smell sweeter too!

  3. Yeah I’m a sugar scrub girl too. The one I am using at the moment from Crabtree & Evelyn Naturals is divine. It smells like brown sugar and ANZAC biscuits. My favourite cheapie (Garnier Bodytonic in the yellow tube) is a sugar one too. I must admit, though, that I love the sound of Lush’s Ocean Salt scrub…
