It’s a Lipstick Jungle Out There

June 30, 2008

Of course, I watched Lipstick Jungle last night. Jury’s still out. I’m not sure if I find the characters all that believable but then it took Sex and the City a couple of seasons to hook me. It’s obviously trying to be SATC’s sequel. It has the New York backdrop, the glamorous women, and the designer product placement. As the credits rolled at the end, there was even a list of some of the labels seen in the show, such as Bottega Veneta and Gucci. I’d missed all of them though - I’m more of a spot-the-beauty-buy viewer. You know, I would have thought there’d be a lot more beauty in a show called Lipstick Jungle. I only got my beauty fix twice. As Victory braced herself to face her staff after her latest catwalk collection was universally panned, she slicked on gloss (couldn’t tell which one sadly, but it was a gorgeous glimmery ruby). And when Nico pulled herself together after her steamy makeout session with a guy who was 1) not her husband and 2) many years younger, she reached for her YSL lipstick*. As fleeting as the scenes were, I guess beauty did play an important supporting role - lipstick, after all, being essential warpaint for we women in the urban jungle.

It’s creamy to wear and rich in colour and comes in an exquisite palette of shades, such as Provocative Pink, seen here on Ingrid, the divine PR for YSL and one of the chicest members of Sydney’s own lipstick jungle.

  1. Hahaha, I’m a beauty-product-spotter too. I remember coming out of ‘Elizabethtown’ and having no part of the movie stick in my mind except for the fact that Kirsten Dunst’s character had lots of Philsophy in her bathroom.

  2. Doh, missed last night — totally cannot wait for TiVo to launch next month (please Tax Man, can I have a big return this year? I have to record lots of TV shows? Thanks) — but I heard it got picked up for a 2nd season, so maybe that’s a good sign?

I watched Cashmere Mafia when it was on last year and I actually really enjoyed it… but I guess there was only room for one SATC sequal :P

  3. I can’t wait for TiVo! And the iPhone! And fingers crossed a tax return instead of bill …

I’m glad Lipstick Jungle is doing another season. I liked Cashmere Mafia too but it kind of brought bad karma on itself being basically a wanna-be Lipstick Jungle, which is Candace Bushnell’s and so rightful heir to the sequel throne. And how cute is Lindsay Price as Victory Ford?
