Just Quickly …

Once again I’m running late for work (I will post Be Genki winners tomorrow, I promise!) And once again I’m running out of time to do things like shave my legs and do a mini facial, which used to be a regular part of my freelancing days. Which all begs the question, how do women manage to look groomed at all when they: work, have a relationship, have kids, have friends, have a dog, do errands, etc. Does beauty just keep tumbling down the priority list? I really am desperately hoping not. Timely then that I’m working on a beauty feature all about getting ready in a rush. Timely also that I just ran out of mineral makeup yesterday. I just can’t afford the time for all that shaking and buffing and checking in the mirror in natural light. It was a sign that it was time to rethink my foundation. So I’ve just gone back to a tinted moisturiser. Revlon has a brilliant tint-like foundation coming out in late September (sorry that’s teasing, I know, but it’s worth the anticipation) – it moisturises, provides great coverage, and even comes with some broad-spectrum sun protection on the side. Anyway, all will be revealed in the October issue of Madison. Speaking of which, seeing as the deadline for that is, oh, a week ago, I’m off to work.

How often should we be using body scrubs? I’m addicted to the feeling of salt and sugar scrubs but five times a week is probably overdoing it, right?

Yes probably … especially when it comes to salt scrubs, as the salt particles can be very abrasive. Sugar scrubs would be a much better bet because the granules are rounder and gentler. Also, if you’re scrubbing on wet rather than dry skin, that makes it all a little less scratchy. So if you really do love a big scrub up, using a sugar-based mix on wet skin a few times a week should be fine, especially if you concentrate on the rougher areas, such as feet, legs and elbows.

The Look: The gorgeous Gilmore Girls star is all grown up in hot pink lips.
The Low-Down: To make fuchsia pink lipstick the statement it’s so dying to be, take time for application. Starting out for perfectly primed lips, use a brush to evenly paint on two coats, tissue-blotting after each to press pigment into lips and make for a longer-lasting effect.

Self-Tanner Salutations

I’m sitting here shivering and wearing: tights, socks, tracksuit pants, t-shirt, hoodie (with hood up), scarf and even gloves. And underneath it all I am sporting two layers of newly minted fake tan – actually, there are three on my butt and thighs. Why did I bother, you might you ask. Well, it’s because I was at a shoot yesterday where we had a spray-tanner ‘body-contour’ our model. We all know it – fake tan makes you look slimmer. But it’s not until you see the before and after that you’re really sold. So our spray-tanner basically used a darker tanning solution to give our model instant abs, toned and taut thighs, and a pert little butt. It was really quite incredible - as in, who needs the gym. And seeing as my yoga teacher has just left for a three-week retreat and left me finding it very difficult to be inspired to get up at 5.30am when it’s three degrees outside, I think I may have found the way to stay in shape for the interim. Just call it sun salutations of the faux variety.

PS – running late for work … will announce winners of last week’s Be Genki comp tomorrow. Sorry!
