Diary-Date: The New Me

July 11, 2008

I don’t expect you to bring out the violins or anything, but can you imagine how hard it is to do this job in the middle of winter? I’m now writing for October issues. October is almost always loosely themed ‘the body issue’. It’s written for that time of year when most of us start to think about coming out of beauty hibernation. You know: scrubbing, de-fuzzing, moisturising, firming, tanning, the usual drill … (It gets a bit same-same, I know. Between you and me, I’ve heard about a writer whole literally copy-pasted her previous year’s body feature, changing only a few product suggestions. Um-ahh.).

It’s all well and good to spend all that extra body-buffing time in the spring and summer. But in winter - much less appealing. I have a line of fake tans and firming creams across my bathroom bench, waiting in anticipation for me to open them up and try them on. But by the time I dry off from a shivery shower, the last thing I want to do is stand there naked while I mess around with moisturisers and massage thingies and fake tans. And it’s next to impossible to find the motivation to shave or do a pedi when you know you’re just going to hide all your hard work under tights and boots.

Anyway, enough with the whingeing and whining. Inspired by the fabulous Gucci resort collection (want it all: the patterned shifts, the billowing gowns, the glossy legs, the rippling hair), I’m forcing myself to prepare for spring. Just some of the upcoming launches I’m excited about getting stuck into…

Gillette Venus Embrace, which will appear in supermarkets and pharmacies throughout August, features a whopping five blades.

Another over-achiever is ModelCo Body Meringue. Out September 7, it’s an instant bronzer, a self-tanner, a body shimmer and … drum roll … even a cellulite treatment. There’s nothing not to love about that.

And set for release on the following day is The Body Shop’s Wellbeing & Massage range featuring products for ‘total energy’, ‘deep sleep’ and ‘divine calm’. I think I need all three.

So I may look a shambles now. But give me a few weeks. And I’ll look like how a beauty editor is meant to look.

  1. Ooooh I’m looking forward to the “emerging from winter hibernation issues”! I myself am in Full Winter Denial - I’m tanned up, wearing Kai, sporting coral nail polish, and lusting like I have never lusted before after Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess perfume. I am going to have to check out that new ModelCo product, STAT.

Unfortunately, my yearly resolution to “spend winter reducing my cellulite so I am nice and firm in time for summer” didn’t really fly. Again.

  2. Ooooh I think I need that Body Shop stuff too!! But hrm… FIVE BLADES? I’d hope never to have so much stubble that I need to use five blades.

  3. Hahaha pretty soon we won’t even be able to pick up a razor, such will be its blade-laden weight.

  4. I’m sure all beauty editors look beautiful, whatever time of the year, during summer I always paint my toes, winter I’m a little lax, still do the pedi, but leave the nails to ‘rest’ before I bring out the colours…til then, can’t wait for the colours of summer…and The Body Shop’s wellbeing products.
