How do you French braid a fringe to the side of hair?

August 11, 2008

This is actually near impossible to describe well in words but I’ll give it a go … Okay, so take your fringe to the side (either all of it or half, depending on whether you have a side or middle part), split it into three sections and start braiding regularly. On the third turn, take a small piece of hair from the side of the plait, pulling that over into the plait too. Do the same from now on at every turn, so that the plait weaves itself into the rest of your hair. You’ll find that some bits of fringe stick out – either leave them be for a casual effect, or else smooth them down with a dollop of gel. Keep on French-braiding hair towards the back of the head. You can either clip it at the side of the head and let the ends of the section fall free, or else you can braid it back into a bun or ponytail at the back of the head, as seen here on Sarah Michelle Gellar. I hope that makes sense!

  1. Oooh, oooh, ooh!! I do this all the time and it always garners compliments! It looks really pretty if you do a deep side part and then braid along your hairline and then back down along the side of your head. The tricks are:
    a) Practice (or is it practise?) heaps and heaps and heaps. I still have days where I can’t get it right.
    b) Do it when your hair is a little dirty (it’s a great day-3 style), and employ dry shampoo and hairspray for some volume and grip.
    c) Use a tailed comb to section the bits and also to stick it in at the end and pull the braid up and out a bit so it’s not flat to your head (if that makes sense).
    d) Start out with a teensy tiny braid and let it get fatter as you go along.
    e) Get your mum to do it for you. If she can braid. My mum can’t. Hence I was never quite as cool as I shoulda been. Hmmppff.

  2. I’ve tried clips, tucking bangs behind the ear, headbands, even sunglasses, to keep my bangs out of my face–but never thought of this! It looks excellent on SMG.
