Inspiration of the moment: Jennifer Aniston. Okay sure, she may have a monthly budget of $20,000 to look this good. But it doesn’t have to be this costly, or complicated, to polish up your act and get your glow back. Read on for your spring-clean beauty routine.
Skin: If your budget allows for it, book yourself in for a peel and hydrating facial. A peel will intensely exfoliate the complexion, removing all the dead cells and smoothing out the skin surface – this also happens to be a perfect primer for a hydrating treatment, which will replenish and re-plump winter-weary skin. If you prefer to DIY, set aside a night to relax. Cleanse your face of all makeup, then exfoliate. Follow with a super-moisturising mask, such as Avène Instant Soothing Moisture Mask ($35 from pharmacies), which can be left to absorb into the skin for an overnight deep-treat.
Eyes: Did you know that you can also exfoliate the eye area? The key is to be oh-so-gentle. Try mixing part exfoliant with part cleanser, and lightly massage under the eyes and out towards the temples. Follow with an eye mask to plump up the skin and, most importantly, fine lines. Try Clarins Skin-Smoothing Eye Mask ($62 from Adore Beauty).
Body: Spend ten minutes dry body brushing (buy a firm-bristle brush from most pharmacies or The Body Shop), using light whisking motions and always working towards your heart. This will stimulate a sluggish lymph, as well as gently exfoliate skin. But to most effectively slough off dead skin, take a handful of salt scrub and massage into dry skin all over. One great buy: Urban Rituelle Beachcomber Coconut & Ginger Balinese Sea Salt Body Scrub ($24.95, from Scentiments). Stand in a tub of running water while you do this – the salts and oil will dissolve into the water and give you the perfect excuse for a therapeutic bath session. Don’t towel off completely – slather yourself in body cream when skin is still slightly damp, as this way you’ll seal in extra moisture.
Hands & Feet: After soaking feet, take to the soles and heels with a foot file to remove rough, calloused skin. Next work in a foot scrub for a couple of minutes on each foot. As for hands, scrub up with Yes to Carrots Pampering Spa Manicure ($29.95 from Big W, Target and pharmacies), which is a mix of oils and sea salts, then lavish on a hand cream.
Hair: If you can’t remember when you last visited a salon, it’s time for a trim – nothing else will deal with those scraggly ends. If you can afford it, add on a treatment and a colour glossing for a super-shiny finish. Otherwise, buy yourself a deep-conditioning hair treatment and use it instead of your regular conditioner for the next few washes; beyond this, a weekly treatment top-up will suffice. To boost colour and shine, try John Frieda’s fabulous Luminous Color Glazes ($19.99 each, from David Jones, Priceline and pharmacies).
Finally: There’s nothing like a gradual tanner for giving a tired girl back her glow. It tints and hydrates at once, making it the perfect product to lure dry and dull skin out of beauty hibernation. One great buy: Palmer’s Natural Bronze Tanning Moisturiser ($6.95 from pharmacies).
