Last week, I was so sure that black lipstick would never work in Australia. This week, not so sure. Several reasons. I found out that Poppy King is bringing out her Lipstick Queen Black Tie Optional lip gloss and lipstick in a couple of months (they’re not meant to be worn just literally – they’re also designed as a way to add intensity to other lipstick shades). And also that Chanel is set to launch a collection of not-quite-black-but-very-very-close lipsticks. Think Black Satin mania for lips. Oh and also, Halloween happened.
I have never seen so many people over the age of ten dress up in Halloween theme in this country. King’s Cross looked even spookier than usual on Friday night (no mean feat), with all sorts of dark-lipped pale-skinned witches lurking around. Why has Halloween suddenly become so big here? Maybe it’s just some kind of reaction to all the scary recession talk.
Not that Halloween is just about spooky chic, of course. In Hollywood, it has become an excuse to dress up as just about any character you can think of. This year, Kim Kardashian went as Wonder Woman, Adrina Patridge as a lyrebird and Kate Hudson a 1960s flight attendant. But you have to give it to Heidi Klum in the effort stakes. And also for not caring about looking cute. This year, at the huge Halloween party she hosts annually, she went as the multi-armed Hindu goddess Kali, completely covered in blue face paint. I’m not anticipating blue base makes any kind of move into mainstream beauty. But it does make black lipstick seem a less scary option.

I bought this excitedly and couldn’t wait to get it
delivered! I have already tried their Saint and
Sinner line, both are exceptionally smooth and
perfect. Unfortunately, the Black lipstick, I don’t
know what is wrong with it, but it’s very, VERY
chalky and waxy. It almost has the feel of trying to
use a candle stick for lipstick. The color is very
sheer almost grey and would be perfect if it wasn’t
for the fact that the lipstick itself clumps up in little
waxy bits as soon as you put it on your lips. I even
contacted Lipstick Queen directly to ask if maybe I
had gotten something from a bad batch. The worst
part is I can’t return the lipstick to the store I had it
shipped from since I have already used it over and
over trying to get it creamier, i.e. mixing it with
vaseline and gloss and everyting else I could try, I
SO didn’t want to give up on it. But nothing is
working and it continues to leave little waxy clumps
on my lips. I also have yet to hear back from the
Lipstick Queen company. Maybe I should have
purchased the Gloss in Black instead.
I’m so bummed about this.
