Paris, 1860s. Actresses and courtesans use greasy fat-based paints to make up their faces before a performance (public or private). Entrez, the quite fabulously named Alexander Napoleon Bourjois.
Monsieur Bourjois set about to develop baked-dry powder makeup for his beloved Parisian glamour girls. His blush pot, in fact, was the world’s first powder blush. Over the next few decades, bijou little Bourjois powder pots, with an assortment of decorative designs, found their way onto dressing tables all over Paris, and from there into beauty legend.

To celebrate this très chic history, Bourjois is releasing its vintage collection, eight pots decked out to echo back to an original nouveau-esque design. Choose from three blushes ($20 each), five eye shadows ($19), or the Vintage Collection Gift Set ($49.95), which contains eye shadows in Blanc Diaphane and Marron Glacé, and a Blush in Rose D’Or.
Available this month from Kmart, Target and selected Priceline stores.
