Every winter my cheeks flush a rosy-red. Is this an early sign of rosacea? My mother has just been diagnosed with that.

I’m 99% certain that it is indeed rosacea. If your mum has it, there’s a very good chance you do too. Luckily you’re at the very early stage – the flushing and blushing stage – so it’s possible to keep the condition under control and ensure it doesn’t worsen and become permanent. The best treatment is simply avoiding triggers as much as possible. These vary from person to person and can include spicy food, caffeine, alcohol, saunas, intense cardio exercise (there’s a great excuse not to spin if ever I’ve heard one) and, in your case, cold temperatures. It’s not always so practical, however, so also have a back-up plan of a treatment moisturiser. Something that has been specifically formulated with easily sensitised skin in mind will give your skin extra defence against aggressors, as well as have a soothing effect. Try Avène Diroséal, $32 from pharmacies.
