When I apply foundation it just flakes on my skin, should I use a tinted moisturiser?

You could – but before you lash out on one, try adding a dollop of moisturiser to your foundation to see if that helps with spreadability and blendability (it’s basically a DIY tinted moisturiser anyway). You should also make sure you’re exfoliating regularly (twice a week is the usual rule of thumb - but any time your skin is looking a little flaky you can mix some scrub into your cleanser for a mini exfoliation) and moisturising skin well. If you’re naturally dry, trying treating skin, or at least the really parched areas, with an oil (rosehip oil, for instance, gives a gorgeous dewy effect). If, after all that, you’re still experiencing some flakiness, consider applying a primer before foundation to smooth the skin surface and create a good canvas for foundation to sit on.

  1. I love mixing a bit of moisturiser into foundation but I have learned something that gives a better finish. Use water-based (ie oil free) moisurisers with oil-free foundations, and oilier moisturisers with oilier foundations. If you mix a water-based product with an oil-based one, it can separate and go a bit gross. It then ends up looking a bit wrong on your skin. Seems simple but it’s these things we don’t think about!
